Easy Waterfall Walks

  • The Cascades (~2 miles) — a short, easy walk to a pretty run of small waterfalls and rock formations; a quick, low-effort favorite close to town
  • The Basin (~6 miles, Franconia Notch) — a short walk to a striking glacial granite pothole, about 20 feet across, carved by the Pemigewasset River. Follow the Basin–Cascade Trail a bit farther for Kinsman Falls and a string of gorgeous cascades and pools
  • Lincoln Woods Trail (~5 miles) — a flat, wide former rail bed along the East Branch of the Pemigewasset; easy and great with kids
  • Diana’s Baths (near North Conway, far end of the Kanc) — an easy, nearly flat 0.6-mile path to 75 feet of cascades and pools; a small parking fee applies

Gorges to Walk Through

  • Flume Gorge (~8 miles, Franconia Notch; (603) 745-8391) — boardwalks lead through an 800-foot natural granite chasm with walls 70–90 feet high, past waterfalls and covered bridges; timed tickets are often required in season
  • Lost River Gorge & Boulder Caves (~7 miles, 1712 Lost River Rd, North Woodstock; (603) 745-8031) — a one-mile boardwalk with about 1,000 stairs winds through a 300-foot-deep glacial gorge, with 11 optional boulder caves to climb through

For Experienced Hikers

The Franconia Ridge Loop (via the Falling Waters and Old Bridle Path trails, taking in Little Haystack, Mount Lincoln, and Mount Lafayette) is the crown jewel of New Hampshire hiking — roughly 8–9 miles, strenuous, and largely above treeline. Other big days include Cannon Mountain via the Kinsman Ridge Trail and Mount Moosilauke (~30 miles) for a full 360° summit. These are serious mountain hikes: start early, carry the essentials, and turn back if the weather turns.
